Many New and Domestic Unrecorded Species Discovered in Shinan, a World Natural Heritage Site

[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] On the 27th, Jeonnam Sinan-gun announced that it newly discovered a total of five insect species, including one new species and four unrecorded species, during this year's discovery and investigation of new biological species in Sinan.

Sinan-gun conducts intensive surveys every year on major biological habitats such as the Sinan mudflats, which are designated as a World Natural Heritage site. This time, a total of five insect species, including one new species and four unrecorded species in Korea, were newly discovered.

The newly discovered new species of tiger longhorn beetle belongs to the order Coleoptera and does not yet have an official Korean name. It is a candidate new species found in the Jeonnam region (Bogildo, Wando, etc.), and a related longhorn beetle expert is preparing a paper for publication. It has also been confirmed to inhabit Sinan.

Sinan-gun plans to register the results of this biological species survey in the national biological species list through paper publication and other processes by the first half of next year.

Park Woo-ryang, mayor of Sinan-gun, said, “Sinan is a place rich in biodiversity with various biological resources inhabiting it,” and added, “We plan to continue ecological resource discovery such as ecological surveys of major islands in Sinan-gun and biological species discovery surveys to establish Sinan-gun's biological resources.”
