Decision to Be Made After Discussions with Resident Briefing Session and Site Selection Committee
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Since Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced Sangam-dong as a new candidate site for Seoul's metropolitan resource recovery facility last August, he met directly with residents of Mapo-gu, including Sangam-dong, for the first time on the 26th.
The meeting was initiated by the residents. On the morning of the day, as Mayor Oh was leaving his home for work, residents approached him and proposed a meeting, which he immediately accepted on the spot. The meeting lasted for over two hours.
Seoul City explained that regarding residents' doubts about the fairness of the composition of the 'Site Selection Committee,' the committee was formed with 10 members on December 4, 2020, in accordance with Article 7 of the Enforcement Decree of the Waste Facility Promotion Act. Among the 10 members, 7 were recommended by the 10th Seoul Metropolitan Council, ensuring there was no issue with fairness.
The residents demanded transparency in the selection process of the Sangam-dong candidate site, the postponement of the residents' briefing session originally scheduled for October 5, and the complete cancellation of the candidate site selection. Seoul City accepted the residents' demands and decided to determine the date of the residents' briefing session scheduled for the 5th of next month after discussing it with the Site Selection Committee.
Seoul City initially planned to hold the residents' briefing session on October 5 to thoroughly inform residents about the selection process of Sangam-dong as a candidate site for the metropolitan resource recovery facility and to resolve residents' concerns. However, residents expressed the opinion that since the Site Selection Committee was currently reviewing the feasibility investigation process of the candidate site and collecting residents' opinion letters, holding the briefing session was somewhat premature. The city accepted this and decided to reconsider.
Seoul City stated, "As the candidate site has been selected, we plan to continue ongoing dialogue with local residents in the future."
