[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Mokpo Maritime Police Station announced on the 27th that it will conduct special crackdowns on safety violations to establish a safe fishing culture and prevent marine accidents as the number of sea fishing users rapidly increases during the autumn peak season.
The special crackdown will be conducted for one month from the 1st to the 31st of next month, following prior publicity and guidance through police substations and local government electronic billboards from the 24th to the 30th.
The targets of the crackdown include ▲ unreported departure and arrival ▲ violations of business hours and business areas ▲ false reporting of disguised crew members ▲ chronic safety violations (not wearing life jackets, overloading, drunk operation, etc.) ▲ illegal extensions and safety inspections.
The number of fishing boat users has been steadily increasing every year, with 127,000 users last year. Among them, about 45,000 users, or approximately 35%, used fishing boats during the autumn leisure season (September to October).
Accordingly, the maritime police plan to strengthen maritime patrols and conduct random inspections before departure during the crackdown period to establish a safe fishing culture and business order for fishing boats, carrying out intensive crackdowns both at sea and on land.
A Mokpo Maritime Police official said, “We will do our best to prevent marine accidents through proactive safety management during the autumn sea fishing peak season so that a safe and enjoyable fishing culture can be established.”
