[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] The “Government Recommendation to Urge the Uninterrupted Promotion of the Gaya History Research and Restoration Project,” proposed by Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Council member Jo In-je, was approved at the 4th plenary session of the 398th regular meeting of the Gyeongnam Provincial Council held on the 27th.
The main content is that although the Gaya History Research and Restoration Project should be steadily continued as a mid- to long-term plan, there are concerns that research, investigation, and restoration of Gaya history may be delayed as it has been excluded from national tasks since the inauguration of the new government. Therefore, from the perspective of securing continuity and consistency in national policy, the government is strongly urged to continuously promote the “Gaya History Research and Restoration Project” without interruption.
Representative Jo, who proposed the recommendation, explained the background, saying, “Since the inauguration of the new government, there has been no will or separate movement to promote the Gaya History Research and Restoration Project, and with the war between Ukraine and Russia making the UNESCO World Heritage registration of the Gaya Tumuli unclear, there is great concern that the momentum for future Gaya-related projects may be lost.”
He continued, “National policy can only establish its authority and value when it guarantees continuity and consistency that transcend political ideology or changes in power. The Gaya History Research and Restoration Project should also be continuously promoted regardless of regime change, laying the groundwork so that the ancient history and culture of Gaya, preserved as today’s heritage, can grow into tomorrow’s asset.”
Jo stated, “The Gaya History Research and Restoration Project has institutional grounds specified in the ‘Special Act on the Maintenance of Historical and Cultural Areas.’ It is a national project promoted with government budget under systematic support at the national level according to the ‘1st Basic Plan for the Maintenance of Historical and Cultural Areas (2022?26).’ This is a critically important task concerning the history of the Republic of Korea that must not be stopped due to regime change or differing political ideologies.”
The government recommendation approved on this day is scheduled to be sent to the President, Speaker of the National Assembly, Prime Minister, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration, and Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do.
