[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Juri] The popularity of the Welsh Corgi, the breed of the late Queen Elizabeth II's companion dogs, is soaring in the UK, leading to an increase in adoption prices. Recently, the adoption price for a single Corgi has surpassed ?2,500 (approximately 3,835,000 KRW) for the first time ever.

According to AFP on the 26th (local time), amid the increased demand for pets following the COVID-19 pandemic, the adoption price of Welsh Corgis has surged. News agencies reported that this was influenced by the image of the Corgis 'Mick' and 'Sandy' waiting in front of Windsor Castle for the funeral procession during the Queen's funeral held on the 19th.

The local pet adoption site 'Pets4Homes' stated on the same day, "The search frequency for 'Corgi' has increased about tenfold compared to a week ago."

They added, "Breeders' asking prices for Corgis have reached a record high today, and the average asking price has doubled in just three days."

Queen Elizabeth raised about 30 dogs throughout her life. She was especially known to favor Welsh Corgis, which have short legs, long backs, and thick fur.

During the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, Corgi puppies appeared in a scene where Daniel Craig, the lead actor of the '007 series,' paid respects to Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, drawing attention.

The Queen's last companion dogs, 'Mick' and 'Sandy,' were announced to be taken care of by the Queen's second son, Prince Andrew, and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York.

Meanwhile, the Welsh Corgi is a breed originally used as a herding dog in the Wales region of the UK, characterized by short legs and pointed ears. It is divided into two breeds: Pembroke and Cardigan, with the Pembroke generally being slightly smaller than the Cardigan. Due to heavy shedding and an active personality, owners need to provide special care when keeping them indoors.

They are prone to obesity and, due to their long backs, have genetic issues such as disc and joint problems.
