Emphasizing 'One China' in UN General Assembly Speech
Warning Message to External Forces Interfering in Taiwan's Internal Affairs
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Wang Yi, China's State Councilor and Foreign Minister in charge of diplomacy, warned that the most resolute measures will be taken against forces obstructing the unification with Taiwan.
On the 24th (local time), during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Wang reiterated the existing position that Taiwan is part of China's territory.
He stated, "China wishes to achieve peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Strait with the utmost sincerity and effort," adding, "However, to achieve this goal, we must resolutely strike at Taiwan independence forces and take strong measures to exclude interference from external forces."
He warned, "Only by realizing complete reunification can the Taiwan Strait welcome lasting peace," and "Any attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs will be met with opposition from the Chinese people, and any act to obstruct the great cause of reunification will be broken by the wheels of history."
Wang emphasized that the 'One China' principle is a fundamental norm in international relations. He noted that 181 countries have recognized, when establishing diplomatic relations with China, that Taiwan is part of China and that the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China.
Regarding the Ukraine situation, he stated that a diplomatic resolution is necessary. He said, "China supports all efforts conducive to peacefully resolving the Ukraine crisis," adding, "The urgent task now is to encourage reconciliation and promote dialogue, and the fundamental policy is to build a balanced and sustainable security structure considering the reasonable security concerns of all parties."
He further appealed, "We call for preventing the crisis of the Ukraine situation from spreading to other regions and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries."
Earlier, on the 22nd, at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) foreign ministers' meeting on the Ukraine issue, Wang also stated, "All parties should exercise restraint and avoid words and actions that deepen confrontation."
Regarding the North Korean nuclear issue, he emphasized the existing stance of 'dual-track advancement' (pursuing the denuclearization process and the North Korea-US peace agreement negotiations simultaneously) and the principle of 'gradual and simultaneous steps.'
He said, "The nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula should adhere to the dual-track advancement and the principle of gradual and simultaneous steps, jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation."
On the Palestinian issue, he advocated the 'two-state solution' (the concept that Israel and Palestine coexist as separate states), and regarding Afghanistan, he asserted that economic recovery and improvement of people's livelihoods are key.
Wang also stated, "China, which accounts for one-fifth of the world's population, moving toward modernization has great significance globally," and "China will provide wisdom for humanity's development challenges and contribute to creating a new form of human civilization."
