The Amendment Finalized by the Price Countermeasure Deliberation Committee
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The Seoul city taxi fare adjustment plan passed the Seoul Metropolitan Council's standing committee on the 22nd. The main points are raising the base fare to 4,800 won and introducing a flexible late-night surcharge fare system.
The Seoul Metropolitan Council's Transportation Committee approved the taxi fare adjustment plan submitted by the Seoul city government as originally proposed at the extraordinary session held that day.
This adjustment plan aims to resolve the late-night "taxi crisis" by increasing taxi transportation revenue to encourage taxi drivers who have switched to other jobs such as delivery services to return, ultimately increasing the supply of taxis.
According to the adjustment plan, starting from February next year, the base fare for standard taxis will increase by 1,000 won from 3,800 won to 4,800 won.
At the same time, the base distance will be reduced from the current 2 km to 1.6 km, the distance fare standard will be adjusted from 100 won per 132 meters to 100 won per 131 meters, and the time fare will be adjusted from 100 won per 31 seconds to 100 won per 30 seconds. The rate of increase is accelerating.
Additionally, a flexible late-night surcharge fare system is expected to be introduced. The late-night surcharge period, currently from midnight to 4 a.m. the next day, will be moved forward to 10 p.m. Also, during the hours with many passengers from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., the surcharge rate will increase from 20% to 40%.
Meanwhile, the Seoul taxi fare adjustment plan will be finalized after the plenary session on the 28th and the subsequent Price Countermeasure Deliberation Committee meeting.
Furthermore, the standing committee members advised that, in addition to the fare increase, other measures should be implemented simultaneously to address the fundamental problems of the taxi industry.
