[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has prepared a roadmap for creating an 'L-shaped' semiconductor belt and will establish an industrial complex where semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment companies can settle.
Yongin City announced on the 18th that it will create a 350,000㎡ (approximately 105,800 pyeong) industrial complex in Cheoin-gu for materials, parts, and equipment companies to move into the L-shaped semiconductor belt, which extends from the materials, parts, and equipment research and manufacturing facilities (440,000㎡) within Yongin Platform City to Samsung Electronics Giheung Campus Future Research Complex (1,080,000㎡), Giheung Future Advanced Industrial Complex (Semes, 110,000㎡), Jigok General Industrial Complex (Lam Research R&D Center, 70,000㎡), Tongsam General Industrial Complex (Surplus Global, 50,000㎡), 2nd Yongin Technovalley (270,000㎡), Yongin Semiconductor Cluster (4,160,000㎡), and Wonsam Semiconductor Cooperation Complex (project complex volume under negotiation, 240,000㎡).
To this end, the city plans to conduct a demand survey targeting semiconductor companies by December, review location and development methods, and then coordinate with Gyeonggi Province, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to secure industrial complex volume.
Once the volume is allocated, the city will establish and approve the industrial complex plan in 2025 and begin phased industrial complex development construction from 2026.
Alongside this, the city will create a dedicated organization for systematic fostering of the semiconductor industry and prepare grounds to actively relax building regulations within the industrial complex to support resident companies.
Additionally, the city will strengthen partnerships with Samsung Electronics to ensure the timely establishment of the Samsung Electronics Giheung Campus Future Research Complex and will expedite permit procedures.
Currently, as the first basic local government nationwide to promote it, the city plans to complete the enactment of the 'Semiconductor Industry Promotion and Support Ordinance (tentative name)' without issues and submit it to the Yongin City Council in November.
Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin said, "Following the L-shaped semiconductor belt roadmap, we will achieve the agglomeration of materials, parts, and equipment companies and lay the foundation to perfectly establish a semiconductor ecosystem with global competitiveness alongside Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix," adding, "Together with 1.1 million Yongin citizens, we will develop Yongin City into a global semiconductor hub city comparable to Silicon Valley in the United States, fostering growth and development."
