[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Hwang Donghyuk, the director of the Netflix original 'Squid Game,' won the Emmy Award for Directing, becoming the first non-English language drama director to receive this honor.

On the 12th (local time), at the 74th Emmy Awards ceremony held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles (LA), the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) named Director Hwang as the winner of the directing award.

When Director Hwang's name was announced for the directing award, he went on stage and said, "Please give me a moment," before taking out a note.

Then Director Hwang expressed his acceptance speech, saying, "Thank you to the Emmys. Also, many thanks to Netflix. This is not something I did alone, but we all made history together."

This is the first time a non-English language drama has won the directing award at the Emmy Awards, which is the most prestigious ceremony in the U.S. broadcasting industry.

Previously, Oh Youngsoo and Park Haesu, who were nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and Jung Ho-yeon, nominated for Best Supporting Actress, did not win.

The Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a TV drama went to Matthew Macfadyen of HBO's 'Succession.' The Best Supporting Actress award went to Julia Garner of the Netflix original series 'Ozark.'

The Emmy Awards, started in 1949 and hosted by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), are the most prestigious awards in the U.S. broadcasting industry and are also called the "Academy of Television."

Previously, Netflix's 'Squid Game' made headlines as the first non-English language drama to be nominated for an Emmy Award.
