[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 50s working on the construction of an underground fuel tank at a military base in Seoul fell to his death in an accident.

Seoul Gwanak Police Station announced on the 8th that they are investigating Mr. A, a man in his 50s who died during construction at the Capital Defense Command (Subangsa).

Mr. A fell to his death around 10:40 a.m. the previous day while clearing an existing fuel tank at Subangsa in Namhyeon-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. It is reported that he died from severe head injuries. The site supervisor who heard Mr. A’s screams reportedly called the police.

The fuel tank itself was 2.3 meters high, and the height from the floor to the position where Mr. A was working is still being determined.

It was confirmed that Mr. A was a facility manager directly employed by the construction company contracted by Subangsa.

A police official stated, "We are investigating whether safety equipment was in place at the site and whether safety-related managers were present," adding, "The first investigation was completed the previous day, and further investigation is planned."

Meanwhile, since the construction cost was in the range of 100 million KRW, it is understood that the Serious Accident Punishment Act does not apply. The Act will apply to construction projects costing less than 5 billion KRW starting from January 27, 2024.
