Up to 60 Hours Battery... Enlarged Display
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Soo-yeon] Apple has launched the 'Apple Watch Ultra,' combining durability and advanced features targeting extreme sports enthusiasts such as diving and triathlon.
On the 8th (Korean time), Apple held an online event called 'Far out' and unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra.
The Apple Watch Ultra features a 49mm titanium case and a sapphire front crystal. The case wraps around all edges of the flat sapphire front crystal to protect the display. It offers the largest and brightest display in the history of Apple Watch series with a maximum brightness of 2000 nits. A customizable action button allows convenient access to various functions.
It boasts the longest battery life among Apple Watch models. Under typical usage conditions, the battery life lasts up to 36 hours. With a new low-power mode, battery life can be extended up to 60 hours.
The Wayfinder watch face is specially designed to fit the larger Apple Watch Ultra display, featuring a built-in compass on the dial and ample space for up to eight complications.
It is introduced with three bands: Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band. The official release is scheduled for the 23rd, priced at 1,149,000 KRW.
Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, said, “Apple drew inspiration from explorers and athletes worldwide to design a completely new category of Apple Watch model with extreme environments in mind that had never been considered before. The Apple Watch Ultra boasts the most powerful performance and ultimate durability in Apple Watch history,” adding, “The Apple Watch Ultra will establish itself as a versatile tool that helps users push beyond their limits in adventure, endurance sports, and exploration.”
The Apple Watch Ultra is equipped with three built-in microphones, significantly enhancing voice call quality. An adaptive beamforming algorithm captures voice while reducing surrounding background noise. Even in harsh windy conditions, it provides clear and crisp sound quality by utilizing wind noise reduction algorithms such as machine learning.
The Apple Watch Ultra supports precise dual-frequency GPS for the first time in an Apple Watch. It integrates both L1 and L5 GPS along with a new location tracking algorithm, providing accurate distance, speed, and route data.
The operating system (OS) runs on watchOS 9. watchOS 9 includes advanced running metrics such as stride length, ground contact time, vertical oscillation, and running power to measure performance. New workout views like segments, splits, and elevation allow users to see key workout metrics at a glance. Users can elevate training intensity with features including heart rate zones, custom workouts, and pacers. The 'Race Against Previous' feature will also be added later this year.
It offers intuitive operation. The action button allows users to start workouts immediately, move to the next interval during a session, or split segments at any point during exercise.
The newly revamped Compass app in watchOS 9 provides deeper information and three different views. The Compass app introduces a new hybrid view supporting both analog compass dials and digital displays.
The Backtrack feature uses GPS data to create a route showing the user’s traveled path. It is useful when lost, disoriented, or needing to retrace steps. This feature can run automatically in the background in areas without network connectivity. In emergencies such as getting lost or injured, it is designed to emit an 86 dB siren.
The wrist temperature operating range is designed to withstand extreme environments, from freezing mountain cold (-20° C) to scorching desert heat (55° C). It has received MIL-STD-810H certification, a standard popular among military equipment and rugged device manufacturers.
It also includes features for marine and water sports enthusiasts. Designed for water sports including recreational scuba diving with a maximum depth limit of 40 meters. It offers a new Depth app with an intuitive user interface (UI) utilizing a new depth gauge. The Depth app allows users to check time, current depth, water temperature, bottom time, and maximum depth reached at a glance.
