Composed of 4 types... excluding the 'Mini' model
Pro model price freeze defies industry expectations
iPhone 14 Pro starts at 1.55 million KRW
Collision detection and satellite emergency request features
Pro line adopts 'punch-hole' design
Equipped with the 'fastest' A16 Bionic chip
The Apple iPhone 14 series' premium line, the Pro and Pro Max models, have switched from a notch design to a punch-hole design.
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 series at a 'Special Event' in the early hours of the 8th (Korean time). The iPhone 14 series consists of four models: the 6.1-inch standard model, the 6.7-inch Plus, and the premium models, the 6.1-inch Pro and the 6.7-inch Pro Max. The 5.4-inch Mini model, which was released until last year, was not launched.
Contrary to industry expectations that the Pro model prices would increase by $100 (138,000 KRW) compared to last year, the prices were set at the same level as last year. Accordingly, the iPhone 14 standard model starts at 1.25 million KRW, and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at 1.35 million KRW. The iPhone 14 Pro starts at 1.55 million KRW, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at 1.75 million KRW.
Collision Detection and Satellite Emergency SOS Features Also Included
All four models of the iPhone 14 are equipped for the first time with collision detection and satellite-based emergency SOS features. The iPhone detects car crashes and automatically calls emergency services if the user is unconscious or unable to use the iPhone. It also connects the antenna directly to satellites, allowing users to send and receive messages with emergency services when outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
The standard and Plus models of the iPhone 14 are equipped with the 'A15 Bionic' chip, which was used in the iPhone 13 Pro models. The Pro models feature the more advanced new chip, the 'A16 Bionic.' Apple explained, "The A16 Bionic chip, the fastest in smartphone history, boasts performance several generations ahead of competitor products."
'Dynamic Island' Debuts... New Name for Punch-Hole Design
As initially expected, the premium Pro line removed the iconic iPhone 'notch' and adopted a 'punch-hole' design with only the camera module cut out. The notch design, often called 'M-shaped hair loss,' had been criticized for spoiling aesthetics. The punch-hole design, newly named 'Dynamic Island,' allows users to interact with notifications simply by tapping and pressing. An always-on display was also included. The Pro line is finished with a stainless steel band and features a matte glass back. The standard and Plus models use aerospace-grade aluminum.
The Pro models also feature the first-ever 48-megapixel camera on an iPhone. It includes a quad-pixel sensor that adjusts appropriately to the photo being taken and a second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization feature. It also has a function that dramatically improves low-light photography.
The standard and Plus models are available in Midnight, Blue, Starlight, Purple, and Product (Red) colors, with storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The Pro and Pro Max models come in Deep Purple, Silver, Gold, and Space Black colors, with storage options of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Pre-orders start on the 9th in North America. In-store sales begin on the 16th for the standard and Pro models, and on the 7th of next month for the Plus model.
Meanwhile, Apple plans to continue using upcycled parts for environmental protection. It uses upcycled plastic bottles for antennas and 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets such as MagSafe products. Apple aims to eliminate all plastic from packaging by 2025.
