'2022 Nowon Dalbit Sanchaek' Event... Call for Exhibition Works

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) will conduct preliminary programs to prepare for the representative Nowon-gu festival, '2022 Nowon Moonlight Walk,' which will be held in October.

The Nowon Moonlight Walk is an autumn festival that the district has been hosting since 2018. Along approximately a 2km section of the Danghyeoncheon walking trail, the most beloved by residents, about 150 various art lanterns and light sculptures are exhibited on the water surface and riverbanks.

The district is conducting a preliminary program called 'Moonlight Greeting' and recruiting participants to ensure that the Moonlight Walk becomes a festival shared with residents, beyond a simple outdoor exhibition.

First, a public art participation program will be held with local youth and residents. Participants will listen to explanations from artists about the intent and production methods of the artworks and will collaboratively create seven pieces that will be exhibited at the actual festival.

Depending on the characteristics of each artwork, the target participants and number vary, and participation is possible individually or as a group. Production locations and schedules for each piece can be checked on the website, and applications are accepted until the 18th. It is expected to be a meaningful opportunity to meet and communicate with artists and directly participate in art creation.

Next, during September, two cultural lecture programs will be held every Thursday in the lecture room on the 4th floor of the Nowon Culture and Arts Center.

On the 8th and 15th, classes titled 'Public Art and Local Culture' will be offered for middle school students and older youth as well as general residents. Discussions will cover the meaning and functions of public art and ways to connect it with the local community while preparing for the festival.

On the 22nd and 29th, classes will be held for volunteers assisting with the festival and resident guides who will provide artwork explanations. Lectures will focus on cultural access rights for people with disabilities, the elderly, and children, as well as the role of docents.

Through these classes, participants will learn how to explain visual art to the visually impaired and help them understand the artworks, as well as how to guide transportation-vulnerable individuals, including wheelchair users. This preparation aims to make this year’s Moonlight Walk a festival that all residents, including those with disabilities, can enjoy together.

Detailed information and participation registration for the preliminary programs can be found on the official Nowon Moonlight Walk website and the Nowon Cultural Foundation website.

Meanwhile, despite the COVID-19 situation last year, the Nowon Moonlight Walk established itself as a representative cultural event of the district, attracting over 153,000 visitors over 19 days. This year, it will be held from October 14 to 30, exhibiting new works that will add charm to the autumn nights along Danghyeoncheon, offering residents a unique experience.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “We prepared resident participation programs to create the Nowon Moonlight Walk together with the residents,” adding, “This year’s festival is not just about watching and enjoying but also about creating and preparing together, hoping it will be an opportunity for residents to unite as one.”
