[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam County in Jeonnam is selling 50 tons of low-carbon rice cultivated using paddy water management technology in collaboration with a startup company.

According to the county on the 5th, in partnership with ThanksCarbon, a carbon reduction platform developer, they announced that from this month, 50 tons of low-carbon rice produced in Gyegok-myeon will be provided through Naver Metaverse (Zepeto).

ThanksCarbon is a platform that facilitates the initiation or sponsorship of carbon reduction projects through brokerage services. The sale of Haenam rice was sponsored by BC Card, and participants who practice carbon neutrality within the metaverse will be rewarded with low-carbon rice.

The rice provided this time is Haenam rice certified by the Ministry of Environment for low carbon, cultivated using farming methods and technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by saving fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural materials, and energy.

The rice packaging also uses environmentally friendly paper packaging, and through the campaign, it is expected to widely promote low-carbon rice and provide an opportunity to inform consumers about ways to voluntarily reduce carbon emissions.

Along with this, the county is playing a leading role in developing rice cultivation technologies using low-carbon farming methods by promoting the ‘Low-Carbon Paddy Water Management Technology Dissemination Pilot Project’ as a public contest project of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs starting this year.

In this project, about 80 farms participate in an area of 126.6 hectares and 552 plots in the Gyegok-myeon area, working on developing reduction coefficients and disseminating paddy water management technology to reduce greenhouse gases (methane) generated during rice cultivation.

County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan said, “As damage to farms caused by abnormal climate is increasing day by day, practicing carbon neutrality is no longer optional but essential, requiring the interest of many people,” and added, “As young consumers pay more attention to low-carbon rice, it will be a good opportunity to raise awareness of the climate crisis among people.”
