Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, newly organized the ‘Child Meal Committee’ on the 31st to support safe and healthy food for vulnerable children.

This was in response to a recent incident involving foreign substances found in school meals within the district, aiming to ensure safe meal support by establishing measures to prevent recurrence, including hygiene management of child meal cooking companies and food poisoning prevention.

On the same day, the district held a ‘Child Meal Committee Meeting’ in the large conference room of the district office, attended by Mayor Kim Tae-woo and about 10 committee members.

The meeting proceeded with ▲appointment of new committee members ▲election of vice-chairman ▲deliberation and resolution of agenda items.

The members reviewed the selection criteria for child meal recipients in the first half of 2022 and the status of meal providers, actively offering various opinions to improve the quality of child meals.

The Child Meal Committee is an organization that deliberates and resolves overall matters related to supporting meals for vulnerable children, such as children from single-parent families at risk of food insecurity and children from households eligible for emergency welfare support. The newly launched committee consists of nine experts from various fields, including two ex officio members, professors, child facility workers, and education support office officials.

Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “It pains and weighs on my heart to think of the wounds our children and parents have suffered due to the recent school meal incident. We will do our best to prevent such incidents from happening again through preventive measures and thorough pre-inspections.”

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-soo) held the first meeting of the ‘Mayor’s Direct Disabled Coexistence Committee’ at Mapo-gu Office on the 31st.

Mapo-gu has placed emphasis on ‘walking with the vulnerable’ in its 8th-term administration and has been promoting welfare enhancements for socially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities by establishing ▲the Mayor’s Direct Disabled Committee ▲resident-participation filial piety meals for seniors aged 75 and over ▲and building the ‘Sunlight Center’ to support pregnancy and childbirth.

The establishment of this committee marks the first step toward coexistence with persons with disabilities. The committee chair is Mayor Park Kang-soo, and it consists of 12 members including persons with disabilities, disability welfare organizations, and disability-related experts, who will serve as the helmsmen of disability welfare projects during the 8th-term administration.

At the first meeting held on the 31st, Mayor Park Kang-soo said, “I hope this committee will operate as a practical aid in establishing realistic welfare policies for persons with disabilities to live together in the community. We will actively reflect the committee’s opinions in district administration and do our best to make Mapo-gu a better place for persons with disabilities.”

During the meeting, the committee’s future operation plans were reported and discussed, and members pledged to actively communicate and cooperate to discover policies that promote coexistence with persons with disabilities.

Going forward, the committee will propose welfare policies related to persons with disabilities, discover disability welfare agendas, and actively reflect them in district administration. It will also serve as a communication channel to listen to and address inconveniences related to daily life for persons with disabilities.

Additionally, to enhance expertise, a panel of 30 advisory members composed of persons with disabilities, heads of disability organizations, professors, lawyers, architects, and residents will be operated to provide professional advice and gather opinions by field during committee operations.

The district expects that through the establishment and operation of this committee, welfare policies tailored to the perspectives of persons with disabilities will be realized, and solutions to previously unresolved issues will be derived.

Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seong-heon) recently announced on the 31st that it signed a business agreement with the Seoul Social Service Institute (CEO Hwang Jeong-il), becoming the first autonomous district in Seoul to strengthen the public care cooperation system and support for care blind spots.

The district is promoting the strengthening of public care services in an era of aging population and increasing single-person households, while the Institute operates the Seodaemun Comprehensive Home Care Center, providing high-level care services that are difficult to perform in the private sector.

Under the agreement, Seodaemun-gu residents will receive focused support for COVID-19 emergency care services, Care SOS Plus services (support for those with income below 120% of median income), and hospital care services for abused children and elderly.

At the agreement ceremony held on the 26th of this month, Seodaemun-gu Mayor Lee Seong-heon said, “The expansion of care areas and rapid crisis response through this agreement with the Institute is expected to greatly contribute to building the ‘Life Care Welfare System’ that the district aims for.”

Hwang Jeong-il, CEO of Seoul Social Service Institute, said, “This agreement will be an opportunity to strengthen the mutual capabilities of the two organizations to enhance support for care blind spots in the community.”

Seodaemun-gu provides five major care services (temporary home care, short-term facility admission, meal support, housing convenience, accompaniment support) and five mid- to long-term linked care services (health support, welfare checks, care system guidance, case management, emergency support) to seniors, persons with disabilities, and residents aged 50 and over through the Care SOS Center project. Applications can be made at the local community service center.
