[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jung-wan] Car owners driving supercars worth hundreds of millions of won, such as Lamborghini, were mass arrested by the police in Russia.
On the 29th (local time), according to the British daily Daily Mail, police dispatched to the Moscow car parade site where about 170 luxury supercars including Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Porsche, and Bentley had gathered arrested the car owners on charges of violating protest laws.
Most of their vehicles were confiscated on-site for investigation. Some of the arrested car owners are reported to have received detention orders.
The sports car owners participating in this event planned to march through downtown Moscow with stickers saying "Successful People." The entrance fee for this event was 4,200 pounds (about 6.6 million won), and breakfast and an after-party were also scheduled.
The Moscow police stated that they took such measures because the organizers did not obtain permission for a rally-type event. However, the event organizer, cryptocurrency tycoon Aleksei Kitrov, claimed that "this event was planned for the exchange and friendship of Russian elites" and that the event was notified in advance to the Russian authorities.
President Vladimir Putin has expressed dissatisfaction with the display of wealth by tycoons. Accordingly, some argue that the authorities' actions are aimed at blocking the ostentation of some wealthy people amid the prolonged war with Ukraine and the increasing number of citizens suffering from economic hardship.
Regarding this incident, pro-Putin Senator Vladimir Zavarov said, "Participants who tried to flaunt Western countries' vehicles must be legally punished," adding, "They should be forcibly deployed to the Ukraine war. Although they may be useless at the moment, they will be quite helpful for menial tasks in the rear."
