[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will hold a ‘Chuseok Holiday Event’ at five traditional markets in the area until the 12th.

In addition to offering 10-30% discounts on ritual items at each market, there are events such as payback with Onnuri gift certificates for purchases over a certain amount and prize giveaways through a lottery.

This is to revitalize traditional markets that have been depressed due to COVID-19 and to ease the burden on residents preparing for the Chuseok holiday amid ongoing price increases.

The event includes participation from five traditional markets in the area: Huam Market, Sinheung Market, Malli Market, Yongmun Market, and Ichon General Market.

Huam Market offers Onnuri gift certificates until the 7th (while supplies last), and Ichon General Market from the 6th to the 8th, with gift certificates given according to purchase amounts. During this period, each traditional market offers a 10% discount on livestock products, fruits, and ritual items.

Gift certificates are given as 5,000 KRW for purchases over 30,000 KRW and 10,000 KRW for purchases over 50,000 KRW.

Sinheung Market holds an event for two days from the 2nd to the 3rd. Customers who purchase over 50,000 KRW receive a 10,000 KRW Onnuri gift certificate, eco-bags for purchases over 50,000 KRW, portable carriers for purchases over 70,000 KRW, and masks for COVID-19 prevention are given when posting #SinheungMarket on SNS.

Malli Market offers 25-30% discounts on livestock products, fruits, and ritual items until the 12th, and also holds a lottery event for customers who make purchases.

Yongmun Market offers 5-10% discounts on ritual items until the 1st, and customers who collect stickers after purchases receive gifts or Onnuri gift certificates according to purchase amounts.

On the 24th, before the Chuseok holiday, Yongsan-gu Mayor Park Hee-young, who visited Yongmun Market, said, “I hope the traditional market events will contribute not only to stimulating consumption in the district but also to revitalizing commercial areas, serving as a good opportunity to boost the spirit of traditional markets.”

In addition, the district operates ‘Traditional Market Day for Employees’ on September 1-2 to invigorate the local economy by revitalizing the depressed traditional markets.

Meanwhile, according to data released on the 24th by Korea Price Information Service (a price survey agency), the cost of purchasing Chuseok ritual table items (for a family of four) at traditional markets is 35.6% cheaper than at large supermarkets this year. It costs 301,000 KRW at traditional markets, while 408,420 KRW is required at large supermarkets.

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) is conducting discount sales of ritual items and prize giveaways to promote sales and encourage the use of traditional markets and alleyway commercial districts struggling from flood damage during the Chuseok holiday.

Ritual items will be sold at up to 20% discounted prices, and customers who purchase over 30,000 KRW or 50,000 KRW will receive Onnuri gift certificates. Customers can also enter a lottery with their purchase receipts to win holiday gift sets.

Markets affected by floods in August have undergone extensive cleaning and thorough disinfection to prepare clean traditional markets for Chuseok. The district will continue to monitor disinfection status and support disinfection and cleaning during the event period to ensure residents can visit markets with peace of mind.

Gwanak Jungbu Market allows free parking for up to 2 hours on surrounding roads for residents visiting the traditional market until the 12th.

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Ki-jae) announced that it will temporarily allow parking on roads around traditional markets for about 12 days from September 1 to 12 to revitalize traditional markets and improve convenience for visitors during the Chuseok holiday.

The temporary parking allowance applies to two markets in the area: Singok Market (79, Nambusunhwan-ro 79-gil) and Sinjeong Jeil Market (30, Jungang-ro 34-gil). The allowed sections were selected after consultation with Yangcheon Police Station and market merchants’ associations, considering traffic conditions and whether temporary parking would not significantly disrupt traffic flow.

The parking allowed sections are Singok Market (from NH Nonghyup Bank to KB Kookmin Bank, about 260 meters) and Sinjeong Jeil Market (from Badahoe Fish Market to PAT Sinjeong Branch, about 60 meters), totaling two sections. Parking is allowed for up to 2 hours only for customers during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it should be noted that parking is not allowed 24 hours at all traditional markets.

We hope residents will prepare for the holiday economically at traditional markets full of generous spirit and also invigorate the local economy.”
