Yoon Hee-geun, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, Visits Scientific Policing Research and Development Site

[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] On the 26th, Yoon Hee-geun, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, visited the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and the Science Policing Promotion Center as his first external agency visit after taking office, the National Police Agency announced. The schedule was to visit the research and development (R&D) site of scientific policing to check the progress and achievements and to seek future development directions. The visit is evaluated as reflecting the policy direction of the National Police Agency to utilize science and technology as a means to prepare for future policing.

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology is the nation's top-level national research institute and directly conducts research in cooperation with the National Police Agency, such as the development project for complex cognition including missing children and the equipment development project to support field police officers. It is also recognized for contributing to laying the foundation for R&D in the policing field by supporting the establishment and operation of the Science Policing Promotion Center, a research management specialized institution under the National Police Agency.

During the visit, Commissioner Yoon shared the achievements of R&D in the policing field and confirmed the potential for future utilization in policing sites. The research outcomes of the quadruped patrol robot for crime prevention, the AI-based interactive policing knowledge service Polbot, and the complex cognition system for missing children were particularly evaluated as helpful in scientizing policing services.

In addition, cutting-edge composite material-based equipment supporting field police officers, automatic fingerprint separation systems, and the Visible 112 Reporting Response System are expected to enhance the capabilities of field police and contribute to the specialization of policing services. Especially, the attachable satellite navigation device (GPS) tracker for chasing fleeing vehicles attracted expectations for preventing major traffic accidents.

Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun emphasized, "It has become an era where it is difficult to solve the rapidly changing policing environment with police personnel alone," and added, "To secure the safety of future Korea, bold investment and development in 'scientific policing' that solves policing field problems with science and technology are necessary."
