[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, received the 2022 Korea Autonomy Development Award in the basic autonomy category, hosted by the Korea Institute for Local Autonomy Development.
The "Korea Autonomy Development Award" is given to members of the National Assembly, local government heads, and basic council members who have contributed to regional development by utilizing unique local resources, or who have implemented exemplary policies in line with the era of local autonomy and decentralization.
Mayor Ryu was recognized for his efforts to improve the quality of public education services through projects such as establishing the largest Bang Jeong-hwan Education Support Center among Seoul’s autonomous districts, doubling education expenses, and promoting reading 1,000 books before school enrollment. Additionally, to revitalize the local representative fashion sewing industry, he is developing the Jungnang Fashion Support Center in the Myeonmok Fashion Specific Development Promotion District (292,000㎡), and has strengthened the local economic foundation by constructing Knowledge Industry Centers 1 and 2 and attracting 630 companies.
Furthermore, he expanded resident participation and led local problem-solving through initiatives such as Jungnang Masil with the mayor, alley cleaning, and the Jungnang Vision Roundtable.
He was also acknowledged for realizing resident-centered living autonomy by establishing four village vitality centers to revitalize the community.
To eliminate welfare blind spots such as single-person households, the district strengthened welfare service infrastructure by establishing the Care SOS Center and operating the Integrated Support Center for Families in Crisis. To make Jungnang-gu a child-friendly district, postpartum care services were expanded and 13 communal childcare rooms were created.
Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi of Jungnang-gu said, “This award is an achievement made together with 400,000 Jungnang residents,” and added, “We will continue to implement customized policies suited to local conditions through proactive field administration and communication administration to enhance the pride of Jungnang residents.”
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held on October 5 at the Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Hall Convention Hall in Yongsan-gu.
On the 25th at 2 p.m., Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the scholarship award ceremony for nurturing local talents hosted by the Kiturami Group in the mayor’s office.
Kiturami Group has been continuously engaged in social contribution activities based on the philosophy that educational opportunities should be equal for everyone.
The ceremony was held to deliver scholarships to academically outstanding and low-income students in the Nowon-gu area to support the development of local talents.
The total scholarship amount of 50 million KRW will be awarded to 24 students: 11 high school students and 13 university students in the region.
The ceremony proceeded with greetings, scholarship presentation, and commemorative photo sessions attended by Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, Song Kyung-seok, CEO of Kiturami Holdings, and other officials.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you for your interest and support in nurturing local talents. This will be a great help to local students continuing their studies under difficult circumstances.”
Kangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) held a breakfast meeting on the 25th at the Kangdong-gu Office conference room with heads of 12 major public institutions overseeing the region, including Kangdong Fire Station, Kangdong Tax Office, Kangdong Songpa Education Support Office, and Seoul Eastern Employment and Labor Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
The district resumed the institutional heads’ meeting, which had been suspended for the past three years due to COVID-19, aiming to activate communication and cooperation among institutions. It plans to attempt integrated functions of public institutions in Kangdong to ultimately enhance residents’ convenience and administrative efficiency.
After a brief introduction, the participating heads shared collaborative information and regional issues such as the implementation of the National Employment Support System, application for earned income tax credit, fire safety measures for semi-basement houses during winter, support projects for elementary after-school care classrooms, and the Kangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival. They discussed response methods and cooperation plans for problem-solving by each institution.
In particular, they agreed to provide wholehearted support and work together to ensure many residents participate safely in the upcoming “2022 Prehistoric Marathon Festival” and the “27th Kangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival” scheduled for September and October.
Mayor Lee Soo-hee explained the background of the Kangdong regional institutional heads’ meeting, outlined the vision of the 8th elected term of Kangdong administration, and described major local issues, requesting active cooperation from public institutions.
The district plans to hold regular quarterly meetings of institutional heads to maintain organic cooperative relationships through business exchanges among major institutions, share regional issues, and seek prompt and effective solutions for regional development.
Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, attended the “Seogyo-dong Small Concert Colored with Culture” on the 25th.
At the event, Mayor Park Kang-soo congratulated the first event of the Seogyo-dong branch of the Mapo Cultural Center, established in March this year, and delivered a greeting asking for the promotion of various projects.
