[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] A state-of-the-art multi-stadium dome is set to be constructed in Cheongna International City, Incheon, where the Shinsegae complex shopping mall Starfield Cheongna will be located.

On the 24th, Incheon City announced that Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok and Shinsegae Group Vice Chairman Chung Yong-jin met at City Hall and agreed to comprehensively cooperate on various projects underway in Cheongna, including the construction of the dome stadium.

Vice Chairman Chung conveyed to Mayor Yoo his intention to build a dome stadium for baseball games in connection with the Starfield Cheongna construction project.

Vice Chairman Chung said, "Through the prompt advancement of the Cheongna dome stadium, we will strive to open the dome stadium era ahead of other local governments in Incheon."

In response, Mayor Yoo said, "I hope Incheon City and Shinsegae will cooperate as partners for regional development."

Incheon City and Shinsegae Group agreed to expedite the Starfield Cheongna construction project and the dome stadium construction project, and also to work together to add a new station on Seoul Subway Line 7.

Starfield Cheongna, currently under construction on a 165,000㎡ site in Cheongna-dong 6-14, Seo-gu, Incheon, is a complex shopping mall equipped with shopping, cultural, leisure, and entertainment facilities. The business agreement was signed in December 2012, construction began in July 2020, and the opening is targeted for the second half of 2024.

The 20,000-seat dome stadium to be built alongside Starfield Cheongna plans to have a multi-purpose cultural viewing facility capable of hosting professional baseball games, K-pop concerts, international e-sports tournaments, exhibitions, and more.

Meanwhile, the plan to add a Starfield Cheongna station on the Seoul Subway Line 7 Cheongna extension line, which connects Seoknam-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon to the Airport Railroad Cheongna International City Station and is scheduled for completion in 2027, is also being actively pursued.

The Cheongna extension line is an urban railway line with seven stations spanning 10.77 km. However, while the distance between stations is generally 0.9 to 1.4 km, the distance between stations 005 and 006, adjacent to Starfield Cheongna, is 3.091 km, which is longer than other station intervals.

Moreover, due to large-scale developments such as Starfield Cheongna, Cheongna Medical Complex Town, and Hana Financial Town in this area, there have been continuous calls to increase public transportation services.

The city plans to start detailed design within this year and support construction beginning next year.

An Incheon City official stated, "We will ensure that the addition of the new subway station does not delay the existing projects," and added, "The original Cheongna extension line will be completed as planned in 2027, and we will do our utmost to complete the newly constructed station as quickly as possible."
