[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The sidewalks in Goyang City, a first-generation new town constructed over 10 years ago, will be newly renovated.

Goyang City stated on the 24th, "Due to heavy pedestrian traffic and tree roots lifting the pavement, the sidewalks have become worn and uneven, posing a threat to pedestrian safety," and added, "We plan to improve pedestrian spaces by applying various sidewalk designs."

The newly installed sidewalks will be larger and more even than the existing standards, and the height difference between the sidewalk and the roadway will be reduced to enhance convenience for the elderly and wheelchair users.

The city plans to prioritize the renovation starting next month from Ilsan-ro near the Ilsan Hospital intersection, where pedestrian traffic is heavy, aiming for completion in December.

The city intends to sequentially identify and expand project areas to promote sidewalk maintenance projects befitting the urban brand.

Previously, Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City proposed a new sidewalk design that breaks away from the existing standardized sidewalk blocks as a solution to the sidewalk block issues during the 8th term civil administration work report session last month.

Mayor Lee said, "I proposed the idea because I thought that by paying a little attention to the materials and standards of sidewalk blocks, we could create a much safer and more beautiful walking environment."
