[Asia Economy Reporter Noh Kyung-jo] Samsung C&T will independently carry out a mega solar power project in Qatar.
Samsung C&T Construction Division announced on the 24th that it has won a contract worth approximately 800 billion KRW for a solar power plant project with a total generation capacity of 875 MW, ordered by QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company of Qatar.
This project involves constructing two solar power plants with capacities of 417 MW and 458 MW respectively, located in Mesaieed about 40 km south of the capital Doha, and Ras Laffan about 80 km north. Samsung C&T will independently perform engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC).
The combined site area of the two locations is 10 square kilometers, equivalent to 1,400 soccer fields, making it a mega project with 1.6 million solar panels to be installed. Construction is scheduled to begin in September and complete by November 2024. After completion, Samsung C&T will supply power to energy-related facilities within the industrial complex owned by QatarEnergy and to the national power grid.
It is reported that multiple global construction companies participated in the bidding.
Currently, Samsung C&T is carrying out an LNG terminal construction project in Qatar worth 2.4 trillion KRW. It also has successful experience in executing several large-scale plant projects such as the UHP desalination combined power plant (worth 2.5 trillion KRW).
A Samsung C&T official said, "Following the Guam solar power project, winning this mega solar power project in Qatar has established us as a global player in the renewable energy power generation sector," adding, "We will concretize new business achievements as soon as possible and expand the value chain in the renewable energy power generation sector to include not only construction but also business participation and operation in the future."
