[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will sequentially pay a total of approximately 14.09 billion KRW in military noise damage compensation to 51,673 local residents living in the noise countermeasure area near Suwon Airfield (k-13) from the 22nd to the 31st.
In January and February of this year, Suwon City received compensation applications through 26 locations including local community centers and senior citizen centers. Out of the total 62,116 eligible applicants, 52,345 (84.2%) applied, and after review, 51,716 were finally confirmed as recipients eligible for payment.
The military noise damage compensation is calculated annually based on the previous year’s residency period and paid once a year. This compensation calculation covers one year from November 27, 2020, to December 31, 2021. Individual amounts (30,000 to 60,000 KRW per month) were calculated according to the noise countermeasure area classification (Types 1 to 3).
Residents who did not file objections to the compensation calculation will receive their payments within this month. However, those who filed objections will have their cases reviewed, and the final compensation will be paid in October.
Residents who did not apply for compensation this year can apply during next year’s application period (January to February).
Ji Jun-man, Director of the Airport Cooperation Bureau, stated, "We will continuously request the Ministry of National Defense to expand the noise countermeasure areas, lower the noise level standards, and improve the criteria for workplace deductions to ensure that no residents suffer disadvantages during the military noise damage compensation process." He emphasized, "We will make multifaceted efforts to improve the inconveniences experienced by residents living in the noise countermeasure areas."
