[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Amorepacific announced on the 19th that it has developed the world's first 'Chip-Free Wireless Electronic Skin' (hereinafter referred to as electronic skin) that can measure and analyze skin condition anytime and anywhere.
Generally, skin clinical research requires the use of expensive diagnostic equipment in a place with controlled temperature and humidity. Therefore, skin research results in special environments have been relatively limited.
Ji-yeon Han, Senior Researcher at Amorepacific R&I Center Clinical Lab, began related research while on a business trip to the United States, contemplating a way to diagnose skin regardless of location or environment on the plane. Subsequently, through four years of joint research with Professor Ji-hwan Kim's team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), they developed electronic skin that can be attached to the skin and wirelessly diagnose it. Although it adheres closely to the skin, it has breathability secured by perfectly mimicking sweat pores, causing no skin irritation even after long-term use. The ultra-thin patch diagnoses the skin and transmits data without a battery.
The research results were published in the journal Science.
Young-ho Park, Head of Amorepacific R&I Center, stated, “The electronic skin developed by Amorepacific will play a significant role in advancing domestic and international dermatological research fields by one step,” and added, “We will strive to secure data necessary for developing customized cosmetics and various functional cosmetics to provide better skin solutions to customers.”
Amorepacific expects that through this, it will be possible to easily diagnose the skin of people working in special environments enduring cold, heat, and dryness, and develop customized functional cosmetics. The research outcomes will be applied to Amorepacific’s major brands such as Sulwhasoo.
