[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) will change and install signs in public facility restrooms by September 8 to convert the disabled stalls into 'family (multipurpose) restrooms' that can be used by everyone, including the disabled, elderly, pregnant women, and infants.

This project, promoted as part of the Yangcheon-gu Women-Friendly City Citizen Participation Group's considerate design initiative, approaches the classification of public restroom users not by disabled or non-disabled status but from the perspective of the user's 'choice.' Through design changes, it aims to improve awareness and create an environment where everyone can use the facilities comfortably.

Based on a comprehensive survey conducted last year by the citizen participation group, the design has been unified and will be replaced all at once this time.

General restrooms in public facilities without family restrooms were narrow and only equipped with adult-sized toilets, making it difficult for family visitors accompanied by infants to use them together.

Accordingly, the district plans to replace the existing disabled restroom signs in 50 public restrooms within the area with unified family restroom signs (160 real-name signs) and produce infant-friendly toilet covers (80 units) to be installed by September 8.

In particular, the restrooms will be designed as spaces where parents with preschool children can use them together, creating restrooms considerate of all members.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We are creating family-friendly restrooms that everyone can conveniently use, considering the convenience of family-unit residents visiting public facilities. We will continue to carefully manage administration from the residents' perspective and actively improve any inconveniences.”

Eunpyeong-gu (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) is recruiting ‘Village Safety Keepers’ by the 26th to live safely together in the village.

‘Village Safety Keepers’ carry out meaningful activities to protect the safety of themselves, their families, and neighbors in the Eunpyeong-gu village.

Supported by Seoul City and planned and operated by the Eunpyeong-gu Village Community Support Center, this initiative aims to solve various social issues in the local community with the goal of a sustainable village community.

Any interested resident can apply, and 20 people will be recruited by the 26th. Applications can be submitted by accessing the online Google Form application page.

Before starting full activities, ‘Village Safety Keepers’ must undergo training. The training includes ▲Creating a safe village ▲Field practice inspecting vulnerable areas in the village ▲Crisis situation assessment ▲Standard action guidelines ▲First aid practice ▲Disaster response procedures by case, etc. A ‘Citizen Safety Guardian’ certificate is issued upon completion of more than 90% of the total training hours.

Village Safety Keepers who complete the training will engage in activities to protect village safety, including data collection on safety and risk factors, public forums, research meetings, and activity sharing sessions.

For more details about the Village Safety Keeper campaign, contact the Eunpyeong-gu Village Community Support Center.

A district official said, “We hope this will be an opportunity to consider the community’s role in field-centered and comprehensive prevention and recovery, daily management, and post-disaster restoration.”
