Shinan-gun Holds 13th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony for Late President Kim Dae-jung

[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do held a memorial service on Haedo Island to mark the 13th anniversary of the death of President Kim Dae-jung.

Haedo Island in Sinan-gun is the hometown of the late President Kim Dae-jung, and a memorial service has been held annually since his passing.

Due to the resurgence of COVID-19, the memorial service was held simply with the attendance of County Governor Park Woo-ryang, Sinan County Council Chairman Kim Hyuk-seong, and heads of related organizations, including a flower offering and memorial events.

In his memorial address, Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “President Kim Dae-jung, who inherited the spirit of the Haedo 3 Island Farmland Reclamation Movement, devoted his entire life to defending democracy against dictatorship and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as the first Korean for his efforts toward East-West harmony and Korean reunification.” He added, “At a time when we are facing numerous difficulties due to war and COVID-19, the president’s wisdom and determination are more deeply remembered.”

He continued, “We will reflect on President Kim Dae-jung’s oft-stated principle of ‘conscience in action’ and devote all efforts and sincerity so that this great spirit is fully remembered and inherited by the people of Sinan-gun and future generations.”

Meanwhile, Sinan-gun is promoting the construction of the Republic of Korea Political History Archive Hall on Haedo Island and the East Asia Human Rights and Peace Art Museum on neighboring Sinui Island to inherit the values of democracy, human rights, and peace emphasized by President Kim Dae-jung.
