The rental period ranges from 6 months up to a maximum of 2 years
Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 14th that it is currently promoting emergency housing support in cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for disaster victims who lost their homes all at once due to record-breaking heavy rains in the central region.
Since the 9th, LH has been operating an emergency housing support task force (TF) together with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to monitor the situation and identify the housing relocation needs of disaster victims. At the same time, LH has established its own TF led by the Director General of the National Housing Welfare Headquarters as the general team leader, along with on-site support organizations for disaster victim counseling and emergency housing support (in six locations including Seoul and Gyeonggi), securing available public rental housing.
Emergency support housing utilizes vacant construction rental or purchased rental units near the affected areas. In regions without vacant units, housing will also be supplied in the form of jeonse rental (where LH leases privately owned houses and subleases them to disaster victims).
The rental period ranges from six months up to a maximum of two years, with possible extensions after consultations with local governments. Discussions are also underway with local governments regarding rent reduction measures.
Additionally, LH is simultaneously assessing the housing support needs of disaster victims and consulting with local governments on support measures, while cleaning and performing minor repairs on available housing units. LH is also producing informational booklets to be placed in temporary shelters to provide relevant information to disaster victims.
To this end, on the 12th, Ha Seung-ho, Director General of LH’s National Housing Welfare Headquarters, checked the readiness of the Seoul area on-site support team and conducted an on-site inspection of purchased rental housing located in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, including the interior and exterior conditions.
Director General Ha said, "We plan to provide prompt, customized housing support in cooperation with related organizations such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and local governments," adding, "We will also actively work to improve housing conditions such as semi-basement homes in response to this flood disaster."
Meanwhile, LH has been providing housing support during national disasters such as the 2017 Pohang earthquake and the East Coast wildfires in March of this year, and completed a senior-specialized community housing complex (Haetsalmaru) for disaster victims of the 2019 Gangwon wildfires.
