[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently discovered and secured 11 classified documents, including top-secret ones, during a search of former U.S. President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. It has been reported that two months earlier, in June, Trump's attorney signed a document confirming the return of all classified materials.

On the 13th (local time), The New York Times (NYT), citing four sources familiar with the matter, reported that Jay Bratt, the top counterintelligence official of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, created this confirmation shortly after visiting Trump's Florida Mar-a-Lago residence on June 3rd.

The Department of Justice was investigating allegations that, even after Trump returned 15 boxes of government materials that were taken without authorization from the White House after his departure in January, he still retained additional classified documents.

Bratt and other DOJ officials visited Mar-a-Lago in June to resolve the issue. Multiple sources revealed that after meeting with Trump, they were able to leave with additional classified materials stored in a warehouse following consultations with two of Trump's attorneys. At that time, one of Trump's attorneys signed a declaration confirming that "all materials marked as classified stored in the boxes were returned," according to the NYT.

The NYT analyzed that this signed document serves as evidence suggesting that Trump and his associates initially did not disclose all information about the classified documents to federal investigators. It also explains why the DOJ recently cited "potential criminal violations" in the warrant used for the Mar-a-Lago residence search.
