[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has expressed a welcoming stance regarding the pardon and reinstatement of major business leaders through the Liberation Day special amnesty.
On the 12th, KCCI issued a statement under the name of Kang Seok-gu, Head of the Research Headquarters, announcing this position.
KCCI stated, "We believe those pardoned this time will fulfill their roles and responsibilities as business leaders to overcome the economic crisis and continue the nation's future prosperity," but also added, "However, we regret that the scope of the pardon was not extensive."
They continued, "The business community will take the lead in enhancing ethical values so that companies can gain greater trust from the public."
On the morning of the same day, the government announced that, in celebration of Liberation Day, 1,693 individuals including low-income livelihood-related criminal offenders, major business leaders, labor-management representatives, and specially considered prisoners will receive special pardons, sentence reductions, and reinstatements effective from the 15th of this month. This first special amnesty under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration included pardons for Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics, Chairman Shin Dong-bin of Lotte Group, Chairman Jang Se-ju of Dongkuk Steel, and former Chairman Kang Deok-su of STX Group.
