[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Due to the resurgence of COVID-19, over 120,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 p.m. on the 11th.

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on the same day, 124,857 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19.

This is 6,661 fewer than the previous day's count at the same time (131,518).

Typically, due to a decrease in diagnostic testing over the weekend, confirmed cases tend to increase midweek and decrease towards the end of the week and weekends. The health authorities believe that the decrease in confirmed cases is partly due to reduced testing caused by heavy rainfall on that day.

As of 9 p.m. on the day, the number of confirmed cases is 1.15 times that of a week ago on the 4th (108,390) and 1.50 times that of two weeks ago on the 28th of last month (83,140).

Since there is still time until midnight when the count is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases announced on the 12th is expected to increase further, reaching the high 120,000s.

As of 9 p.m. on the day, confirmed cases were evenly split with 62,471 in the Seoul metropolitan area and 62,386 in non-metropolitan areas, each accounting for 50%.

By region, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 32,662, Seoul 22,836, Gyeongnam 7,768, Incheon 6,973, Gyeongbuk 6,656, Daegu 5,572, Chungnam 5,397, Jeonnam 5,235, Jeonbuk 5,000, Busan 4,319, Gangwon 4,311, Chungbuk 4,235, Gwangju 4,030, Daejeon 3,797, Ulsan 3,104, Jeju 1,978, and Sejong 984.

From the 5th to the 11th, the daily new confirmed cases were 112,858 → 110,634 → 105,472 → 55,267 → 149,878 → 151,792 → 137,241, averaging 117,591 per day.

The health authorities expect the peak of the resurgence to reach around 200,000 daily confirmed cases within this month and plan to release new forecast results next week reflecting recent variables such as the holiday season.
