Patrolling and Inspection Throughout the City to Prevent Flooding and Ensure Road Management
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 11th, Jinju Mayor Cho Gyu-il conducted an emergency inspection of the manhole locking status and the cleaning condition of rainwater collection wells on roads prone to flooding in the area in preparation for heavy rain.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, as of 6 a.m. on the 10th, heavy rain in Seoul and the central region caused 11 deaths, 8 missing persons, and 548 households affected.
In response, Jinju City launched an emergency inspection to prevent damage caused by the heavy rain.
This inspection was carried out to prevent flooding on roads caused by debris such as trash and tree branches blocking manholes and rainwater inlets, which obstruct the flow of rainwater, and to preemptively prevent accidents caused by manhole covers opening due to backflow in the rainwater drainage pipes.
The city prioritized inspecting eight roads, including roads near Ihyeon-dong and the old Route 35 terminus, where flooding has occurred, and plans to patrol and inspect the entire city area by the weekend.
Mayor Cho said, “At a time when COVID-19 is resurging, disasters caused by heavy rain could increase citizens’ damage and inconvenience,” adding, “All departments, related organizations, and eup/myeon/dong offices must conduct pre-inspections to ensure thorough preparation to prevent casualties caused by landslides, slope failures, and flooding of houses or roads.”
