[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The state of California in the United States is installing large-scale offshore wind turbines to achieve the goal of carbon-free power generation by 2045.
According to Bloomberg News on the 10th (local time), the California Energy Commission unanimously approved a plan to install up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of wind turbines along the West Coast by 2030 and increase it to up to 25GW by 2045.
Earlier, Governor Gavin Newsom of California requested the installation of at least 20GW of wind turbines by 2045.
Offshore wind power development in the U.S. has been focused mainly on the East Coast along the Atlantic Ocean rather than the West Pacific Coast.
David Hochschild, Chairman of the Energy Commission, said California's plan could activate the installation of wind turbines along the Pacific coast.
