After the Ministry of Land's investigation request,
the National Police Agency's Investigation Bureau
was assigned to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Financial Crime Investigation Unit
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] The police have launched an investigation into allegations that Eastar Jet obtained a license for changes in its international air transport business by submitting false accounting documents.
The Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 11th that it has been assigned the Eastar Jet case involving obstruction of business execution, which the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recently requested the National Police Agency's Criminal Investigation Headquarters to investigate.
On the 28th of last month, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Heeryong held a press conference and stated, "We will conduct a thorough investigation and audit to determine whether there were any violations of relevant laws during the application and issuance process of Eastar Jet's change of license, and take strict measures based on the results." Subsequently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport requested a police investigation.
According to Eastar Jet's audit report disclosed by the Financial Supervisory Service in May, as of the end of December last year, Eastar Jet was in a state of complete capital erosion. However, the documents Eastar Jet submitted to obtain the business change license were based not on that report but on the disclosure report from May 2020.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport judged that obtaining the change license using different accounting documents constituted submission of false accounting data. Furthermore, suspicions have been raised that Eastar Jet deliberately submitted the 2020 data despite having accounting documents prepared by a professional accounting firm as of February last year during the rehabilitation process.
