[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Despite China's backlash, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, who visited Taiwan, dismissed China's sanctions against her and her family on the 10th (local time) by saying, "Who cares?" and "It has nothing to do with me."

According to Politico and others, Pelosi stated at a press conference with the House delegation that China is using her visit to Taiwan as a "pretext" to conduct large-scale military exercises, adding, "China is trying to establish a 'new normal,' and we cannot tolerate this." She reiterated that the visit was to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, saying, "We will not allow China's isolation of Taiwan."

Pelosi also mentioned that the U.S. military did not try to prevent her trip to Taiwan. Regarding China's sanctions against her and her family as a protest against her visit to Taiwan, she dismissed it as "incidental and irrelevant to me."

Pelosi had also criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping the day before, saying he "acts like a frightened bully." She evaluated her visit to Taiwan on the 2nd and 3rd as "worth it." China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, escalated tensions in the Taiwan Strait by conducting large-scale military exercises following Pelosi's visit.
