[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] As of 9 PM on the 10th, more than 130,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide.
According to Seoul and other local governments, from midnight to 9 PM on the same day, a total of 131,518 people tested positive for COVID-19 across 17 cities and provinces nationwide.
Although this is 14,846 fewer than the previous day's count at the same time (146,364), the mid-day tally shows that the number of cases has remained in the 100,000 range for three consecutive days. Considering that testing usually decreases on weekends and Sunday case numbers tend to be lower, except for Sunday the 7th (53,477 cases), the daily confirmed cases have exceeded 100,000 from the 1st of this month through the 10th.
Additionally, as of midnight on the same day, the number of COVID-19 cases reached 151,792, surpassing 150,000 for the first time in 119 days since April 13 (195,387 cases). Authorities initially projected the peak of the outbreak this month to be 150,000 cases, but with increased travel during the summer vacation period and a rise in cases, they revised the forecast upward to "around 200,000 in August."
As of 9 PM on the same day, the number of confirmed cases was 1.26 times higher than the same time one week ago on the 3rd (101,490 cases), an increase of 27,028 cases. Compared to two weeks ago on the 27th of last month (85,534 cases), the increase was 45,984 cases, or 1.54 times higher.
Of the new cases reported by 9 PM on the same day, 62,425 (47.46%) were from the Seoul metropolitan area, and 60,993 (52.54%) were from non-metropolitan areas.
Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new cases to be announced on the 11th is expected to increase further, potentially reaching the 140,000 range. The average daily number of confirmed cases over the past week from the 4th is 113,400.
