Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Launches Pilot Operation of 'Electric Vehicle Mobile Charging Service'

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced on the 10th that it will pilot the 'Electric Vehicle Mobile Charging Service' in Jeju Island starting mid-month.

On the 1st, a demonstration event for the electric vehicle mobile charging service was held at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance headquarters in Seocho-gu.

The event was attended by Hwang Incheol, Vice President and Head of the Automobile Insurance Division at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance; Kim Ilpyeong, Managing Director and Head of the Automobile Insurance Strategy Team; Lee Hoon, CEO of EVAR; and Baek Sangjin, CEO of TBU, among other officials.

The 'Electric Vehicle Mobile Charging Service' is an on-demand service where customers can select their preferred time and location without having to visit a charging station themselves. Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance’s charging service vehicle will visit directly and charge the electric vehicle contactlessly.

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance plans to operate the pilot service for one year from this month until July next year. The service targets customers residing in Jeju City who have automobile insurance with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and own Tesla Model 3 or Model Y vehicles. After stabilizing the service, the target group will be gradually expanded.

The service can be applied for free by entering a registration code separately provided by Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance into TBU’s 'elecvery' app.

Each service session charges 20kWh, enabling driving for over 100km, and customers can receive the service free of charge up to four times per month.

Customers who agree to provide personal information can also receive a contactless automatic charging service that monitors battery charge status and visits for charging when necessary.

Meanwhile, the mobile charging vehicle is equipped with EVAR’s charging equipment, which has been verified for technology and safety through Korea’s first mobile charging service demonstration.

The company explained that by partnering with TBU’s 'elecvery' app, which has built the charging platform, customers can receive charging services easily and conveniently.

Additionally, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance plans to jointly apply with TBU for a regulatory sandbox demonstration exemption for the 'Electric Vehicle Mobile Charging Service' and aims to introduce various product services, including paid services, in the future.

A Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance official stated, "Our goal is to ensure that electric vehicle customers insured with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance do not experience inconvenience due to charging," adding, "We will continue to develop related product services to contribute to the expansion of eco-friendly vehicle adoption."
