Suspicious 'Additional Loan' Late at Night
Police Urge "Report Suspicious Cash Withdrawals to Police"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The Seocho Police Station in Seoul announced on the 10th that it awarded a certificate of appreciation to a bank clerk at the KB Kookmin Bank Banpo Central Comprehensive Financial Center branch for preventing a voice phishing scam.
The employee sensed that customer Mr. A was a victim of a voice phishing crime when he inquired by phone about cash withdrawal at the KB Kookmin Bank Banpo Central Comprehensive Financial Center branch in Seocho-gu, Seoul, around 6 p.m. on the 5th.
According to the police, Mr. A tried to withdraw cash by visiting several branches besides the mentioned branch and reportedly attempted to obtain an additional loan late at night.
Thanks to the employee’s suspicious report, it was possible to prevent damages amounting to about 130 million won, including 40 million won already withdrawn and 90 million won borrowed from other financial institutions.
A Seocho Police Station official said, "We are grateful that the quick judgment and report by the informant prevented voice phishing in advance," and urged, "Please continue to report any suspicious cash withdrawals to the police."
