[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Medipost announced on the 8th that it has newly appointed Oh Won-il, Head of Research and Development, as CEO.
Newly appointed CEO Oh holds a Ph.D. in Medicine from Seoul National University and joined Medipost as Head of Research and Development in 2004 after working at Seoul Asan Medical Center and Samsung Seoul Hospital. He is the top domestic authority in the field of stem cell therapy, having led the development of the world's first allogeneic stem cell therapy for knee cartilage defects, "Cartistem," and the next-generation stem cell therapy platform SMUP-Cell.
With Oh's appointment, Medipost is accelerating its full-scale entry into the global market. The company will focus its capabilities on global clinical trials and commercialization of Cartistem and the injectable knee osteoarthritis treatment SMUP-IA-01. Based on strengthened partnerships with OmniaBio, a Canadian cell and gene therapy contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) specialist company invested in last month, Medipost plans to enhance corporate value by entering the North American CDMO market, a new business area.
Additionally, as the leading domestic cord blood bank operator, Medipost plans to continuously increase the utilization of cord blood through ongoing research and product development, further expanding its market dominance.
CEO Oh stated, "I feel a heavy responsibility in taking on the CEO position at this critical turning point for Medipost's global market expansion. Based on over 20 years of experience in stem cell therapy research and development, I will do my utmost to ensure the successful global clinical trials and commercialization of our main pipelines. At the same time, I will devote all my efforts to achieving meaningful results in the global CDMO business, a future growth engine, so that Medipost can truly leap forward as a global cell therapy specialist company."
Yang Yoon-sun, the founder and former CEO who led Medipost for 22 years, will continue to support the company's growth as chairman of the board.
