[Asia Economy Reporters Hyunju Lee, Hyunji Kwon] Jeong Mi-kyung, a Supreme Council member of the People Power Party classified as pro-Lee Jun-seok faction, resigned on the 8th.
On the same day, Supreme Council member Jeong held a press conference at the National Assembly main building and stated, "It is a priority to quickly resolve the party's chaotic situation. If my choice is necessary for the success of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, I believe it is an unavoidable decision."
She emphasized, "I tried to prevent the confusion by any means, but it was insufficient," adding, "We must not let the time for regime change created by the people fail due to internal strife or division."
She continued, "Our dream is to create time for victory in the general election," and said, "Let's not criticize each other for having different ways to reach that path."
Supreme Council member Jeong said that Lee Jun-seok should not proceed with legal actions such as injunction requests. She stated, "If an injunction request is made, the party will become more chaotic and troubled," and added, "We should stop; this is not a matter for legal discussion."
She also advised that Lee should make a decision to resign from the party leader position for the sake of the party. Jeong said, "I have talked a lot," and conveyed, "I told him to put aside personal benefits, justification, and grievances, look at the entire party, consider how to save the party, and take the path of a leader."
With Jeong's resignation, only Kim Yong-tae, the youth Supreme Council member, remains excluding ex officio members in the People Power Party Supreme Council. After Assemblywoman Bae Hyun-jin resigned first, Assemblywomen Jo Soo-jin and Yoon Young-seok have also resigned.
The People Power Party, judging the situation as an emergency due to declining approval ratings and the mass resignation of Supreme Council members, plans to hold a national committee meeting on the 9th to amend the party constitution and regulations to allow the acting party leader to appoint an emergency response committee chairman. Assemblyman Joo Ho-young is reportedly the leading candidate for the emergency committee chairman position.
