Seoul City Joins Hands with 12 Major Construction Companies to Tackle Fine Dust at Construction Sites

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 8th that it has signed a voluntary agreement with 12 major large construction companies currently undertaking large-scale reconstruction and redevelopment projects to reduce fine dust generated at construction sites and improve the surrounding living environment, and will expand the operation of ‘Seoul-type Eco-friendly Construction Sites.’

According to Seoul City, 18% of the ultrafine dust generated in Seoul currently comes from construction sites, and large-scale construction sites with a total floor area of over 10,000㎡ are continuously increasing. Strengthened suppression measures are required to minimize citizen inconvenience caused by scattered dust.

Based on the pilot operation results, Seoul City has continuously communicated with major large construction companies to expand eco-friendly construction sites, and through this agreement, designated 101 large construction sites (with a total floor area of over 10,000㎡) located in Seoul as Seoul-type Eco-friendly Construction Sites.

The main contents of the agreement include ▲ active use of low-emission construction machinery within construction sites ▲ attachment and operation of identification cards for vehicles entering construction sites (real-name system for construction vehicles) ▲ designation of responsible roads around construction sites and watering at least once a day (Clean Road Responsibility Management System) ▲ expansion of watering equipment and points of operation ▲ real-time fine dust monitoring using IoT technology (installation of simple measuring devices and electronic display boards), etc.

Seoul City plans to actively support the implementation of the agreement on site by awarding the Seoul Mayor’s Commendation to excellent construction sites that voluntarily strive to reduce scattered dust at construction companies and sites, and by promoting excellent cases of scattered dust reduction to other construction sites and autonomous districts.

Ha Dong-jun, Director of the Air Policy Division of Seoul City, said, “The goal is to establish the use of low-emission construction machinery at construction sites and induce voluntary fine dust reduction through the expanded operation of Seoul-type Eco-friendly Construction Sites.” He added, “We will continue to actively promote various projects that citizens can feel to reduce fine dust generated at construction sites and create a pleasant living environment around construction sites.”
