Eunpyeong-gu, All-Out Effort to Respond to COVID-19 Resurgence

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) is making every effort to strengthen quarantine management to block the spread of the COVID-19 resurgence.

As the number of new domestic COVID-19 cases continues to exceed 100,000 daily, Eunpyeong-gu expects the daily cases to increase to around 800 by the end of this month.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, recently held a COVID-19 countermeasure meeting and urged related departments to focus on strengthening quarantine management to curb the spread, including expanding the 4th vaccine dose and supporting vulnerable facilities.

Earlier, on the 26th of last month, the district added a temporary screening clinic at Yeokchon Station Peace Park. This helped disperse PCR tests that were concentrated at the public health center, enabling faster testing.

As of the 4th, the 4th dose vaccination rate for those aged 50 and over in Eunpyeong-gu is 25.9%. To increase the vaccination rate, the district is expanding public promotion and home vaccination services.

Promotions include delivering information on the effects of the 4th dose, expanded eligibility, and daily quarantine rules through the district website, text messages, and notification talks targeting residents. They also plan to conduct outreach education for those aged 50 and over and facilities related to the elderly.

The number of facilities eligible for home vaccination has expanded from 30 to 58, increasing the target population by 1,400. They directly visit facilities vulnerable to infection such as facilities for the disabled, homeless shelters, nursing homes, and mental health facilities to support vaccinations. The 4th dose vaccinations have been underway since the 27th of last month.

To proactively prevent spread, from the beginning of this month to the 5th, self-test kits were provided to workers and children at vulnerable facilities such as nursing hospitals, elderly care facilities, daycare centers, and kindergartens.

The counseling center to assist confirmed patients with home treatment, the ‘Eunpyeong-gu COVID-19 Integrated Call Center,’ operates 24 hours. The number of ‘one-stop medical institutions’ where testing, face-to-face treatment, and prescription of therapeutics are all available in one place has expanded from 54 to 87.

Two medical mobile task forces for nursing facilities (Lohas Eunpyeong Hyo Nursing Hospital, Lead Hill Hospital) have been designated and will operate until the end of this month. They assist smooth face-to-face treatment including prescribing therapeutics for confirmed patients in nursing facilities.

Mayor Kim Mi-kyung of Eunpyeong-gu said, “I hope residents participate in daily quarantine practices such as proactive self-diagnosis testing and compliance with quarantine rules,” and added, “We will mobilize all administrative means to suppress the spread of COVID-19.”

Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has formed a ‘Domestic and Foreign Resident Volunteer Group’ to promote mutual communication and harmony among local residents and has begun full-scale activities.

The ‘Domestic and Foreign Resident Volunteer Group’ consists of a total of 117 members from three organizations: the Hanul Volunteer Group, which includes domestic residents and foreign residents from China, the Philippines, Vietnam, etc.; the Intercultural Participation Group composed of Chinese organizations and resident representatives; and the Foreigners’ Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit.

They plan to strengthen ties with the local community by practicing volunteer work together for neighbors, leading efforts to improve positive perceptions of multiculturalism, and promoting stable settlement and social integration of foreign residents.

The volunteer group officially kicked off its activities this year by conducting environmental cleanup volunteer work on July 27 at the Daerim 3-dong Senior Center. Despite the hot weather, volunteers installed dehumidifiers and antibacterial agents throughout the facility and carried out disinfection and thorough cleaning to help local seniors spend the summer in a comfortable environment.

Starting from this, the volunteer group will carry out various activities tailored to the characteristics of each organization, including ▲mentoring education for multicultural children with learning difficulties ▲crime prevention campaigns to create safe living zones in areas densely populated by foreigners ▲meal service volunteering at local senior and disability welfare centers ▲sharing happiness packages for low-income families during Chuseok ▲and kimchi-making volunteer work for sharing love in winter.

A resident participating in the volunteer group said, “I am glad to contribute even a little to helping neighbors in need and making the area a better place to live,” and added, “I hope the activities of the domestic and foreign volunteer groups will spread the positive perception that ‘foreigners are our neighbors’ and provide opportunities to increase understanding of multiculturalism.”

The district plans to systematically support the volunteer group by strengthening operational stability and social capabilities so that it can actively contribute to regional coexistence and harmony.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I deeply appreciate the Domestic and Foreign Resident Volunteer Group for spreading positive influence in the community through meaningful volunteer activities,” and added, “I expect them to play a significant role in creating a Yeongdeungpo where everyone, regardless of nationality, lives well together.”

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) announced that the Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center has installed suicide prevention hopeful messages on the pavement blocks in front of crosswalks with heavy foot traffic.

The Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center held a contest for suicide prevention hopeful messages from March to May to spread a culture of respect for life.

The selected messages were installed on pavement blocks in front of crosswalks with heavy foot traffic so that many people can see them. The installation sites include five locations: ▲Geumcheon-gu Office Station intersection ▲Geumcheon Post Office intersection ▲Geumcheon-gu Hannae-ro ▲Siheung intersection ▲Ginkgo tree intersection.

The Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center plans to conduct suicide prevention campaigns at the locations where the hopeful messages are installed from August to November. Through these campaigns, they aim for all residents to become life guardians of Geumcheon-gu and participate in various suicide prevention activities.

The impact of an individual’s suicide on society is much broader and greater than expected. According to the WHO, each suicide death negatively affects 5 to as many as 10 people around the deceased.

Yoo Sung-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I hope the hopeful messages created directly by residents will help prevent suicide and spread a culture of respect for life.”
