Groundbreaking for Suncheon City Eoullim Center to Improve Residents' Quality of Life

Targeting Completion Next Year... Complex Cultural Space with National Sports Center and Library

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) broke ground on the construction of the Suncheon City Eoullim Center on the 4th.

The Eoullim Center is a complex cultural space combining a sports area where people with and without disabilities can participate together and a library. The total project cost is 33.1 billion KRW, including 10 billion KRW in national funding, and it will be built at the Pungdeok retention basin.

The city completed the basic plan and detailed design service in March and selected a contractor through the Public Procurement Service in June to begin full-scale construction.

The center will be built on the site of the Pungdeok drainage pump station, with one basement floor and three above-ground floors, organically connecting the National Sports Center and the library.

Since the Eoullim Center is being built on an existing retention basin, the basement floor is designed with a pilotis structure to maintain the rainwater storage function during heavy rainfall.

The National Sports Center will be a facility with enhanced functions for people with disabilities, including a multipurpose gymnasium, wheelchair storage room, fitness center, and exercise therapy room, operating programs for people with disabilities.

The library will include a special space connected to Suncheon Bay National Garden and facilities to operate various programs.

Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon said, "There has been a lack of cultural and sports facilities near the Ocheon district and Pungdeok-dong, but the Eoullim Center is expected to greatly contribute to improving residents' quality of life," adding, "We will steadily promote the project with the goal of completion by December next year."
