[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The National Gugak Center announced on the 3rd that it held an awards ceremony for the Gugak Digital Music Utilization Creation Contest, conducted to support digital music producers in utilizing gugak audio sources.

Since 2009, the National Gugak Center has developed digital gugak audio sources that can be used for creative works to popularize gugak. To date, approximately 30,000 single notes and 24,000 musical phrases have been produced and are provided free of charge through its website. Additionally, a creation contest is held to encourage composers in both gugak and popular music fields to widely utilize these resources.

The awardees in the audio category are Kim Suyeon, Park Dongseok, Park Seongwoo, Park Chanjun, and Yoon Saem; in the video category, Um Taeyoung, Lee Seonyeong, Han Junsung, and Hong Jeongbin. Participants came from diverse fields including not only gugak but also practical music majors, media art professionals, general office workers, and elementary school teachers, drawing attention.

Among the selected works were newly arranged pieces using traditional folk songs, compositions combining gugak with hip-hop rhythms, and modern music with a lively atmosphere.

Kim Youngwoon, director of the National Gugak Center, said, “I am pleased that the digital gugak audio sources are contributing to sparking interest in gugak among the general public and popular music composers and to the creation of works based on gugak,” adding, “We will continue to add quality audio sources to ensure gugak is widely utilized across various fields and strive to enhance user convenience.”

Meanwhile, the National Gugak Center plans to additionally produce folk vocal music such as minyo and pansori, folk instrumental music such as sinawi and sanjo, and gugak instrument sound effects this year. Furthermore, it will explore various projects to ensure that digital gugak audio sources can be widely used to produce new and innovative content in the popular music market and the global music market in the future.
