'Unlicensed Driving' Juvenile Delinquents Who Caused Fatal Accident Released from Juvenile Detention Center Commit Assault Crime Again

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Middle school students who had caused the death of a university student by hitting a delivery motorcycle while driving a stolen car without a license were caught by the police after being released from a juvenile detention center and committing crimes again.

On the 1st, the Seoul Yangcheon Police Station announced that they had arrested three individuals, including A (15), on charges of special assault and others.

A and two peers are accused of repeatedly assaulting younger middle school students in the Yangcheon-gu area of Seoul and demanding money and valuables.

In March 2020, they were caught by the police while driving a stolen car without a license from Seoul to Daejeon, and while fleeing, they collided with a motorcycle. A university student working part-time as a delivery worker died in this accident.

At the time of the accident, A and the others were juvenile offenders (under 14 years old, criminal minors) and were not subject to criminal punishment but were detained in a juvenile detention center.

A and the others committed crimes again shortly after their release.

The police are expanding their investigation, identifying that there may be more victims among middle school students in the Yangcheon-gu area of Seoul.

A police official explained, "Currently, they are no longer considered juvenile offenders, so arrest warrants have been applied for and issued."
