Popularity of Traditional Game Experiences at Gurye Jirisan History and Culture Center

[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] At the Jirisan History and Culture Center in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, a traditional play festival for children and parents was held for two days starting July 30th during the summer vacation.

The experience was made possible through the talent donation of forest education specialists and featured traditional games such as ▲ Ssangryuknori, an indoor game enjoyed by women ▲ Jeju-style Yutnori called Neokdungbaegi ▲ Mutual support structure play based on Leonardo da Vinci's architectural principles ▲ Turing, a combination of Biseokchigi, curling, and bowling ▲ Giant Jenga for carbon neutrality education ▲ Wooden block stacking using woodworking play ▲ Cooperative calligraphy using natural materials ▲ Feeding forest friends using slingshot play, offering a unique experience that even adults might find unfamiliar, capturing the attention of participants.

This program was planned to awaken interest in fading traditional games and to lead a healthy leisure culture for children. Through traditional play experiences aimed at family units, it provided an opportunity for families to foster harmony and take a restful break during the vacation, creating special memories for participating families.

The Jirisan History and Culture Center will conduct two sessions of job training programs for nationwide teachers in specialized fields during the first half of the year to coincide with the summer vacation in August. Additionally, to offer attractions to visitors, a 7080 nostalgic busking performance is being prepared once more following the first half of the year.

A county official stated, “The Jirisan History and Culture Center has been designated as a Namdo Hanbaki tour course operated by Jeollanam-do, and tour groups visit weekly. It is gaining popularity as a tourist attraction, with nationwide schools visiting for field trips, study tours, and graduation trips. Since its reopening in October 2021, about 13,000 visitors have come.”

The first exhibition hall features an old photo exhibition of Gurye, old farming tools, and nostalgic school uniforms. The second permanent exhibition hall showcases the history of Jirisan, Buddhist cultural heritage, the path of Gurye history, patriotic militias, and the ten scenic spots of Gurye. The third experience hall consists of children's experience facilities and a cafeteria.
