[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Environmental officers of Jongno-gu (Mayor Jeong Munheon) made 400 loaves of bread using rye they personally cultivated on a small plot of land in Pyeongchang-dong and delivered them to 150 elderly residents living alone in the area.
The site at 430-1 Pyeongchang-dong, located on a sloped alleyway, had been neglected for a long time, causing cracks in the retaining wall and bulging at the upper part.
In response, the district removed the underbrush on the site in October last year and carried out repairs and maintenance on the retaining wall, completely eliminating hazards that threatened residents' safety.
Additionally, to prevent illegal dumping of garbage on the site, environmental officers personally sowed seeds and farmed the land this spring, harvesting rye in June.
Although the quantity was not large, the environmental officers and members of the local social welfare council, who volunteered their talents to bake bread, wished to share the joy of the first harvest with residents. They were able to enhance the meaning of sharing by eating the bread together with the elderly.
Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, “Sharing the precious bread cultivated by the environmental officers and made together with residents with the elderly doubles the joy. We will continue to watch over every corner of Jongno and strive to convey warm neighborly love.”
