[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] LG Uplus announced on the 24th that it has become the first domestic telecommunications company to obtain the 'ISO 45001' certification, an international standard occupational health and safety management system, across all business divisions, and received the certificate from a global professional organization.
ISO 45001 is an international certification in the field of occupational health and safety established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2018. It is a system that evaluates corporate systems for identifying and preventing risks and industrial accidents according to industry types. The certification requires annual maintenance and management audits as well as recertification audits every three years to assess the certified companies' systems.
As it is a top-level international certification, companies must pass both the first-stage document review and the second-stage on-site inspection across 10 areas to obtain the certification. Deficiencies found during the on-site inspection are classified into three categories based on their importance: 'improvement recommendation,' 'minor nonconformity,' and 'major nonconformity.' If even one item receives a 'major nonconformity,' the certification cannot be granted.
LG Uplus received an excellent evaluation during the on-site inspection in June. Following the Pyeongchon Mega Center of LG Uplus becoming the first domestic Internet Data Center (IDC) to acquire ISO 45001 in September last year, the certification scope has been expanded to cover all business divisions including Network, Consumer, and Enterprise within a year.
To prepare for the annual ISO 45001 maintenance and management audits, LG Uplus plans to maintain and manage its occupational health and safety system while actively utilizing the Quality and Safety Comprehensive Training Center in Daejeon to strengthen safety education for its employees. When performing the three major hazardous tasks?working at heights, climbing, and manhole operations?it will introduce bucket trucks or enforce a two-person team system. The company also aims to acquire additional international certifications related to occupational health and safety.
Kim Geon-woo, Chief Safety and Environment Officer (Executive Director) of LG Uplus, stated, "Through leading ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, we will build even stronger trust with all individual and corporate customers."
