[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] As COVID-19 enters another wave of spread, the number of new confirmed cases on the 23rd was recorded at around 68,000. The number of critically ill patients doubled in a week, reaching the highest level in 49 days.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on this day, 68,551 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed. This brings the total cumulative confirmed cases to 19,146,180.
Although the number of confirmed cases on this day was 81 fewer than the previous day, the doubling phenomenon, where the number of new confirmed cases roughly doubles every week, continued. The confirmed cases on this day were 1.66 times the 41,303 cases reported a week ago on the 16th, and 3.88 times the 20,266 cases reported two weeks ago on the 9th. Based on Saturday announcements, this is the highest number in 13 weeks since April 23 (75,422 cases).
From the 17th to this day, the number of new confirmed cases over the week rose to the 70,000 range on the 21st to 23rd, then stayed below 70,000 for two consecutive days. The daily average was 60,696 cases.
Among these, 68,258 cases were domestic infections, and 293 were imported cases.

As new confirmed cases surged, the number of critically ill patients undergoing inpatient treatment also increased. The number of critically ill patients on this day was 140, an increase of 10 from the previous day. This is double the 70 patients reported a week ago on the 16th and the highest number in 49 days since June 4 (141 patients).
The number of deaths increased by 30 in one day, bringing the cumulative total to 24,855. One additional COVID-19 death was reported among children aged 0-9. The cumulative fatality rate of COVID-19 is 0.13%.
As of midnight on this day, the number of confirmed cases under home treatment was 358,570, an increase of 29,565 from the previous day.
