[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho District, attended the ‘Kickoff Ceremony’ for the ‘Volunteer Practice Week Seocho V Week’ at 2 p.m. on the 22nd.

‘Seocho V Week,’ named after the ‘V’ in Volunteer, has been steadily operated since 2016 with various themes to intensively practice volunteering during the two-week summer vacation. This year, it was planned as a campaign to encourage participation in small daily actions under the themes of ‘resource circulation’ and ‘carbon neutrality’ with about 600 residents.

The kickoff ceremony gathered about 100 residents to declare their commitment to practicing resource circulation ahead of the Volunteer Practice Week (July 25 to August 5, two weeks) ‘Seocho V Week’ operation.

The event proceeded in the order of ▲report on the progress of the ‘Climate Crisis Response Citizen Participation Campaign’ ▲presentation of appreciation plaques to sponsors ▲reading of the resource circulation practice pledge ▲resource circulation practice performance (transferring plastics into transparent boxes) ▲commemorative photo session. On the day of the event, eco-friendly product experience booths such as making natural mosquito repellent and mosquito-repellent flowerpots were also operated at one corner of the venue.

Mayor Jeon Seong-su of Seocho District said, “The practice of volunteering in daily life and continuous interest have come together to create great strength for Seocho V Week,” adding, “I hope meaningful volunteer activities for the first step of resource circulation will continue steadily so that Seocho becomes a place where people are happy today and look forward to tomorrow.”

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, attended the ‘Meeting with the Forest’ event, a barrier-free forest trail exploration at Suraksan Mountain, at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd.

‘Meeting with the Forest’ was organized to commemorate the opening of the Suraksan barrier-free forest trail and to strengthen the commitment to creating a disability-friendly city by having people with and without disabilities walk the forest trail together.

The event was attended by Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District; Kim Won-je, Chairman of Hongpa Welfare Center; Lee Heung-ju, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan City Association of the Physically Disabled Nowon Branch; and other officials from disability welfare facilities, disability organizations, and disability sports associations. The program included greetings, group photo sessions, and barrier-free forest trail exploration.

For safety, the exploration proceeded with groups spaced apart in the order of wheelchair users, people with developmental disabilities, visually impaired individuals, and non-disabled participants. On-site guides accompanying the exploration vividly explained the features of the barrier-free forest trail and the surrounding natural environment, assisting the visually impaired for a safe exploration.

The Suraksan barrier-free forest trail, opened on the 4th, is a total 1.74 km wooden deck path connecting Nowon Valley to Surak Hanok Daycare Center. The entire section is designed with a width of over 1.8 meters and a slope of less than 8%, allowing easy use for those with mobility difficulties.

The district plans to install additional convenience facilities for people with disabilities, such as a rapid charger for electric mobility devices and a large sterilizer for cleaning wheelchairs and walking aids at the first rest area of the barrier-free forest trail.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok of Nowon District said, “We created the barrier-free forest trail so that all Nowon residents can equally enjoy nature,” adding, “We will implement various projects to promote welfare and leisure for people with disabilities during the 8th local government term and develop into a disability-friendly city.”
