Governor Lee Cheol-woo Urgently Inspects Heatwave Shelters and Construction Sites Amid Heatwave... Checks Heatwave Shelters and Listens to Difficulties of Heat-Vulnerable Groups Gyeongbuk Provincial Government Office.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, visited the heatwave shelters and outdoor construction sites in Yecheon on the 22nd to inspect the preparedness measures against heatwaves, focusing on the three major vulnerable areas.

He visited the Bonghwang Village Senior Center in Yecheon County, designated as a heatwave shelter, to check overall operational status including compliance with quarantine guidelines in preparation for the resurgence of COVID-19, and also listened to users' suggestions. In addition, he promoted safety rules to be observed during heatwaves to vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone and elderly workers in rice paddies and fields.

On the same day, Governor Lee instructed senior officials to personally visit indoor heatwave shelters (senior centers, welfare centers, etc.) in each city and county to check quarantine management, air conditioner operation status, and any inconveniences experienced by users, to minimize heatwave damage to residents.

He then visited the second phase construction site of the provincial government new town to check compliance with basic heatstroke prevention rules, whether work was stopped during the hottest daytime hours, and the installation of rest areas for outdoor workers, among other heatwave preparedness measures.

He also personally distributed the ‘Heat-related Illness Self-Diagnosis Checklist,’ which is being implemented for the first time this year, to workers.

At the site, Governor Lee emphasized, “Heatstroke caused by heatwaves is classified as a serious industrial accident under the Serious Accident Punishment Act. Business owners must pay special attention to prevent workers from being exposed to heatwaves.”

He added, “This year, heatwaves are expected to be prolonged. Residents should frequently drink water, rest in the shade, and refrain from activities during the hottest hours to individually contribute to preventing heat-related illnesses.”

Since the 18th of last month, heatwave warnings have been issued continuously for 28 days starting from 17 cities and counties in Gyeongbuk, with heatwaves intensifying.
